Preserving our cultural history:Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery
The Project:
Founded in 1882, Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery is an important part of Northeast Georgia history, and the resting place for generations of minority clergy, business leaders, political figures, and community leaders. But, over time, Gospel Pilgrim had become overgrown and neglected. The hallowed ground where we honor our guiding historical lights was littered with trash.
Today, with your help, East Athens Development Corporation is leading the effort to recover and preserve Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery. Much of the trash is gone, the vegetation trimmed back, and gravestones are being reset and their graves plotted for the historical record.
We still need your help preserving this important piece of our local history. Contact the EADC to find out how you can make Gospel Pilgrim a keystone of our local heritage.
How you can help:
In 2003, EADC and its partners broke ground on the renovation and reclamation of Gospel Pilgrim. Over the past years, as more of the cemetery has been restored, our focus is turning more and more to providing perpetual care, in order to maintain the resting places of our forebearers in the dignity they deserve.
Perpetual care is also an ongoing expense, and our greatest need today is for contributions in any amount to support our good works. Please contact the EADC to contribute to this vital heritage project.
